Charity

Tufties is celebrated its 10th birthday last year and as part of our celebrations we decided that we want to try to spread some Tufties cheer by fund raising for 2 special children's charities.

Tufties constantly supports charities but as part of our special celebrations we have decided to focus on two - Derian House Children's Hospice and Noreens Kids. These charities do tremendous work to help and support children and their families to improve their quality of life in extremely challenging circumstances.

Derian House Children's Hospice

For the parents of a child diagnosed as terminally ill, there can be no long term future. There is sufficient challenge in just coping with their child's illness from one day to the next. For them, their children's future is counted in smaller terms, sometimes in months or weeks, rather than years, in taking each day as it comes. For them, Derian House becomes an intrinsic part of that future.

Whilst their lives may be cut tragically short, we ensure that they lead as full and normal a life as possible by offering them optimum support to cope with their illness, along with the best possible medical care, and as much fun and laughter as they can pack into every single day.

Noreens Kids

Noreen’s Kids has been established to support the work of a truly exceptional Romanian charity run by Noreen O’Gormana a retired District Nurse who worked in London but became involved in Romania in 1998 after she retired.

She now lives in Slobozia where she has dedicated herself entirely to the care of the sick and poor. There are many children infected with HIV and still a huge need for support of poor families with children suffering from AIDS and other serious illnesses.

In the late 1980’s just before the revolution many abandoned children were given blood transfusions in the mistaken idea that it would help with their “failure to thrive”.

Unfortunately some of the blood was infected with HIV and/or hepatitis Altogether nearly 10,000 children over the whole country were infected with HIV.
Noreen and her team have been making a real difference to the lives of hundreds of vulnerable Romanian families and helping care for children at home.

Charity Evening including auction

On 5th September 2010 Tufties held a joint birthday and charity evening at Artisan Cafe Bar in Rawtenstall. We are delighted to announce that we raised over £5,400!!! A huge Tufties thank you to everyone who donated gifts and their time to these events resulting in so much money being raised for these two worthy charities.....

All money raised will be donated to the two charities.

As Derian House is located in Chorley helping them is logistically simple. Noreens Kids is a different proposition! This year Michelle and myself intend to fly out to Romania at our own expense taking hair and beauty supplies with us so that we can teach some of the more able and older orphans to do basic hairdressing and beauty treatments. This will give them the self confidence and skills they need to perform the treatments and hopefully give them a fresh start and future.
